The BRAT diet stands for Banana, Rice, Applesauce and Toast, is highly recommended for treating stomach illness, nausea and vomiting. Since these foods are low in protein, fat and fiber, it is easier to digest.
1. Bananas
Bananas have a sweet and sour taste. The sweet taste is to bring about a sense of heaviness but the sour taste is known to stimulate the digestive juices, thereby supporting digestion and helps in building up metabolism. Sip on a banana shake to get quick relief.
2. Rice
Rice contains a low amount of sodium and is an excellent source of healthy fibre. This helps to improve digestion and regularise the bowel movement. So, include rice in all your three meals for two-three days to put a full stop on your washroom visits.
3. Applesauce
‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’, well that’s true even when your tummy is upset. The fibres found in this fruit either pulls water out or absorbs excess water from your stool to slow your bowels down. So, why not eat an apple while watching your favourite show or movie or apply the applesauce on a slice of bread?
4. Toast
It feels messy and annoying when you vomit and get nauseated. In these conditions, eat toast with milk and apply a little butter on the bread. It acts as an antacid and is considered as one of the best stomach coating treatments that can be easily prepared. Run to the grocery store to buy bread.
While bananas, rice, applesauce and toast can continue to fit into the dietary routine, you will want to add nutrients to your body. So, eat crisp rice cereal, rice porridge, sandwich, apple soup, rice cakes, mashed potatoes, pancakes, crackers and salty pretzels too.
These kinds of food are bland and easy on the stomach, sticking to them will make you feel better faster. So, follow your body cues and try the BRAT diet! Also, do check up with the physician before trying the diet.
