The exhibition looks at Satish Gupta’s practice as an ongoing journey rather than a linear story. Over several decades, and across many materials and forms, his work has grown through deep focus and sustained attention. It is guided by discipline, repetition, and clarity before action, allowing past, present, and future to exist together in experience. The title Haiku of a Still Mind refers to a way of working, not to poetry. Like a haiku, Gupta’s work is shaped through reduction and concentration. What appears simple is the result of long preparation and repeated effort. In his practice, repetition becomes a mindful act—each return sharpening attention and slowly removing what is unnecessary. This repetition works like a chant, gathering and releasing energy. Stillness here is not inactivity, but a calm and balanced state that shapes his visual language. Gupta’s work avoids spectacle. Moving between abstraction and figuration, it values precision and thoughtfulness across materials such as paint, ink, copper, gold, and text, and across different scales. Certain forms return again and again, each time with subtle change. His work moves from the intimacy of the human body to the vastness of the cosmos, suggesting a continuity where the smallest mark and the largest idea share the same field of attention. In this practice, making becomes a meditative act, and attention becomes a form of devotion. The work reflects cycles of creation, transformation, and renewal, following a sense of time that is circular rather than linear. Consciousness becomes physical—shaped by material, effort, scale, and touch. Surfaces hold the memory of time, patina shows duration, and empty spaces are carefully shaped rather than left blank. Viewers encounter the works first through the senses and the body, before understanding them intellectually. Perception comes before interpretation. This is where coherence appears—when repetition, thought, and the pace of making come together, allowing form to emerge naturally. The exhibition offers not just artworks, but a way of being. It invites viewers to slow down, stay with the work, and enter a space where looking becomes listening, and presence becomes a way of knowing. As a painter, sculptor, poet, writer, calligrapher, draftsman, muralist, and designer, these are not separate roles but different ways he observes and responds to the world. His monumental metal sculptures and murals are displayed in museums, hotels, airports, and ashrams worldwide. A true modern-day renaissance man, his creative genius inspires and illuminates the essence of contemporary artistic expression. In the realm of art, few names evoke the ethos of elegance and sophistication quite like Satish Gupta. His artworks possess a minimalist yet luxurious quality that effortlessly elevates any space they inhabit with their grace and refinement. Satish’s studios, Zazen in Gurgaon, surrounded by a Zen garden of his own design, and Zen Studio 59 in the heart of Delhi, are tranquil spaces for contemplation. Known for their meditative quality, his studios reflect his continuous quest for spiritual enlightenment through art, with each artwork marking a milestone on this profound journey. Early in his career, he received the prestigious Sanskriti Award, and his art has been showcased in over 40 solo exhibitions in prominent galleries across India and abroad. Drawing inspiration from the rich cultural heritage of Indian civilization, his works exude positivity and hope, stemming from inner peace and tranquility. His paintings and sculptures are part of the collection of The Museum of Sacred Arts in Brussels, and The National Gallery of Modern Art, Delhi. They were exhibited at the Shanghai Museum of Modern Art, and The National Museum in Slovenia. Meditations on a Mandala, his sculpture in copper, was displayed at Art Laguna Prize, Arsenal, and at the India Art Fair in 2023. Notably, he collaborated with India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, on a sculpture painting “Om Namo Shivaya” for a charitable cause, which was auctioned by Sotheby’s. Satish’s iconic copper sculptures include Surya at T3, New Delhi’s International Airport; The Buddhas Within at The Prince of Wales Museum in Mumbai; The Devi at The Leela Palace Hotel in New Delhi; and the Zen Forest at the Ritz Carlton in Bangalore. His painting Ganesha is at JW Marriott in Mumbai. The magnificent 23 feet by 22 feet Vishnu at Antilia in Mumbai is a lifetime creation. He also painted a 30-foot-long mural Lotus Sutra for Bengaluru International Airport. The monumental Five Primal Elements, a five-piece metal sculpture ranging between 11 feet to 33 feet in height and weighing over 10 tons, is installed at Jindal Center in New Delhi. His artistic contributions extend to the Utsav Murti of Linga Bhairavi for Sadhguru’s Isha Ashram in Coimbatore. His seven-meter sculpture Wings of Eternity was the centerpiece of an interactive dance performance and gestural live calligraphy by the artist at The Royal Opera House in Mumbai. Gupta created a painting MA, one mile long, on the beach in Puducherry. Many dancers interpreted the five elements and danced along with him as he painted the canvas—perhaps the longest in the world. Zen Whispers, his book, was released at The Jaipur Literature Festival 2018. He has participated in many poetry conferences internationally. In recent years, he has exhibited at the Deborah Colton Gallery in Houston and at Gallery Falkenstern Fine Art in Germany. Also a TEDx speaker, Gupta seamlessly blends spirituality, nature, and ancient Indian traditions into his diverse creations. He is celebrated for his deep philosophical insights and meticulous craftsmanship. His art goes beyond aesthetics, touching the core of human experience and inviting viewers to embark on a journey of introspection and enlightenment.
