A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Dermatology, has revealed that a higher intake of Vitamin A can reduce the risk of skin cancer. This study was conducted by researchers from Brown University, Rhode Island, US
The common type of skin cancer is cell carcinoma, seen mostly in fair skinned people. As per this study, Vitamin A is essential for growth and maturation of skin cells. It also suggests that one should eat a healthy diet rich in Vitamin A, in addition to wearing sunscreen and reducing sun exposure.
Sources of this vitamin are, plant based like sweet potatoes, carrots, leafy green vegetables and animal-based like milk, fish and liver.
Researchers found that people with the highest Vitamin A daily intake, were 17 percent less likely to get skin cancer. This is because their diet majorly contains the plant based sources. Also, over intake leads to side effects such as liver toxicity, osteoporosis and birth defects.
Apart from giving you healthy skin, vitamin A has other health benefits too. Some of them are, preventing night blindness, improves immunity, reduces acne, improves bone and heart health and boosts reproductive system.
This study is another example of how eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables can protect you against diseases and sustain a healthy lifestyle.
