The very controversial Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why, returned with an equally stirring and soul-jarring Season 2. While the story continues to delve into serious depressing topics as sexual assault, substance abuse, and teen suicide, there is some redemption and closure for some of the characters.
Here are some tear-jerking and heartbreaking moments in season 2:
Tyler sexual assault in the bathroom
While bullying and rape have been the common theme in the controversial show, but this particular scene shook many to the bones. Photographer and high school misfit Tyler Down was sexually assaulted by bullies in season 2 finale episode titled, Bye.
Monty and other athletes attacked him in a bathroom, shove his head in a toilet, and then sodomize him with a broken mop handle. He was left bleeding from the rear, bruised, and traumatised, making it one of the most harrowing and heartbreaking scenes on TV in recent years.
Clay Jensen’s eulogy
One of the most moving scenes has to be Clay’s emotional speech at Hannah’s memorial service. After struggling with Hannah’s death all season long, Clay finally finds the strength to let his former love go in a moving eulogy.
He envisions Hannah sitting in the church, looks her in the eyes and says, ‘A good friend once said to me, ‘I can love you and still let you go.’ So, Hannah, I love you and I let you go and I miss you. And I hope wherever you go next, you feel peace, you feel safe in a way you never did here, wherever you go next. I hope you know that I love you.’
Following this, we see Hannah get up and walking out the door into blinding white light. Anyone would reach out for tissues at this point unless you are made of stone!
The Night We Met song moment
During the Spring Fling dance in the final episode of season 2, the song, The Night We Met by Lord Huron plays, it almost felt haunting.
Clay, who was in the middle of taking a group photo, was spooked as the song begins playing and walks into the middle of the dance floor, and later breaks down. Fans remember that the same song was playing in the background as Hannah Baker and Clay danced in season 1, and the lyrics make it even more tragic as he’s “haunted by the ghost” of his past.
Later, Clay is joined by Tony, Jessica, Zach, and Ryan and group hug, which makes this scene an emotional tearjerker!
Mr Porter breaking down in tears
Liberty High School’s counsellor, Kevin Porter was seen struggling with guilt and remorse in entire of season 2, broke down in tears in a powerful courtroom scene.
In the ninth episode of 13 Reasons Why Season 2, Mr Porter takes the stand and testifies that he could have done more to save Hannah. He tearfully asserts, “I could have done more. I could have stopped her from walking out that door. She didn’t just leave, I let her go,” following this he recreates an alternative scenario, wherein instead of letting her go, he stops Hannah and offers the advice that he should have given back then. Mr Porter’s speaking the truth and his eventual redemption makes this scene extremely moving!
