The gruelling contest began with a pole vault competition and continued in the shot put ring where the challenge was to produce as many 12-metre throws as possible, in the span of 10 minutes. The triathlon challenge concluded with a shuttle run competition in which two cones were placed 20 metres apart, with the athletes collecting points for each completed back-and-forth lap over the course of five minutes.
Despite a late start, Mayer caught up with his competitors and surpassed them midway of the first round, finally winning over the Athletic World Champion Niklas and silver medalist Maicel.
Post his victory, Frenchman Kevin Mayer took to his social media page to share his happiness by writing, “Feels good to « compete » again ! Against great distant competitors. But truly can’t wait to face them and all of my decathletes friends in a real decathlon”.
