One of the longest running property disputes in India’s legal history has concluded.
The Ayodhya dispute or Ram Janmabhoomi – Babri Masjid Land Title Dispute had a historical judgement that was awaited by millions. After 136 years of fighting for justice, the case has rested.
In 1992, Babri Masjid was destroyed during a political rally and triggered communal riots in several parts of India, killing more thousands of people and this changed the country’s political face. With the case registered in the Allahabad High Court, it moved through many levels and finally reached the Supreme Court of India.
Earlier this year, a five judge bench under the Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi was formed to settle the dispute. It also consisted of Justice Ashok Bhushan, Justice S Abdul Nazeer, Justice SA Bobde and Justice DY Chandrachud.
In a 1024 page verdict, the Supreme Court cleared the way for the construction of a Ram Temple at the disputed site, recently. It has directed the Centre to allot a five acre plot to the Sunni Waqf Board for building a mosque. Also, a trust should be formed within three months for the construction of the temple.
Ahead of the verdict, the security was tightened all over India, but no reports of unrest were reported. Also, on this historical verdict, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the judgment and tweeted.
The Honourable Supreme Court has given its verdict on the Ayodhya issue. This verdict shouldn’t be seen as a win or loss for anybody.
Be it Ram Bhakti or Rahim Bhakti, it is imperative that we strengthen the spirit of Rashtra Bhakti.
May peace and harmony prevail!
