For the 2020 season of Formula 1, World Champions Mercedes is switching the car colours of their F1 drivers Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas to black to show their stand against racism and discrimination and a pledge to improve the diversity of their team.
With the world coming out in support of Black Lives Matter, the announcement is out after Mercedes’ top driver Hamilton is the first coloured superstar in F1 history. Formula 1 has launched the #WeRaceAsOne initiative along with a new task force that specifically focuses on identification of employment and education opportunities for the under-represented groups across the sport.
Raising voice against racism and discrimination, this step by Mercedes will show the team’s commitment to greater diversity within the team and sport. Now, the team is looking out for new approaches to attract talent from any areas of society and to create credible pathways for them to reach F1.
In addition to changing the colours of their car, Hamilton and Bottas will also race in black overalls in 2020, with both drivers adapting their helmet designs. Also, the call to ‘End Racism’ will feature on the halo of Mercedes cars.
