Suhana Khan, daughter of Bollywood superstar, Shah Rukh Khan and a well known interior designer and producer Gauri Khan, made a debut appearance on a magazine cover for Vogue India’s August issue and the netizens are losing their sleep over it.
Shah Rukh himself presented Suhana’s Vogue India’s August cover to all the guests at the Vogue Beauty Awards 2018 with a speech which quoted, ‘…I hope it’s not taken as ‘entitled’ just because she happens to be Shah Rukh Khan’s daughter. I just hope it’s taken as a responsibility that she has if she’s being given a platform like this, a solo cover for Vogue, which I incidentally have never gotten… I just want to say thank you very much for putting her in a place where the responsibility you’ve put on her is going to remove some of the entitlement she has because she happens to be my daughter. And Inshallah she’ll work hard towards that…’ The actor spoke not only about what life is like for celebrity kids but also shared his hopes for his daughter in the future, the actor reveals that he wants to see his children work their way up to achieve their goals.
The photos showcase the hot avatar of Suhana, presented in a hyper-glamorous avatar, with shimmery and shiny clothes, and flowing hair tossed around like a diva, minimal makeup making her every bit stunning in her first ever photo shoot. Styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania, the 18-year-old is seen posing comfortably in a ruffled dress by Emilio Pucci, make-up by Namrata Soni and soft curls by hairstylist Yianni Tsapatori. The cover reads, ‘ Hello Suhana Khan, Student, Theater Lover, Future Star’.
Amid congratulatory messages, Twitter was flooded with posts slamming the glamour world for choosing Suhana, who is yet to officially step into the fashion/film industry, as the cover girl. The magazine is being called out for promoting nepotism in Bollywood by featuring a superstar’s child. Called the bible of the fashion, Vogue, has previously presented the likes of Deepika Padukone, Kangana Ranaut, Sonam Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra who have attained success and have mastered in their fields while the photo shoot of the star kid, for the cover, who hasn’t really marked her presence anywhere is just an unusual concept fans are finding hard to digest.
Some of the comments on twitter read, ‘I have nothing against star kids and tbh it is not even about nepotism but to see Suhana Khan in the cover page of the August issue of @VOGUEIndia with NO reason as to why she should have been is ridiculous. Is she a model? No. A socialite? No. An actor? No. A change maker? No’. Another post from a struggling actor read, ‘The reason I am annoyed is because when Suhana Khan had to step into the Vogue India office, nobody told her “you don’t fit the requirement.” To wake up each morning with the same amount of motivation for the same agenda each day, every day, try that! I promise it isn’t easy!’ Another took a lash out on Karan Johar saying, ‘Student, theatre lover, future star, daughter of a star who will probably finance all her movies till she actually becomes a ‘star’…. but yea hello Suhana Khan. NepotismRocks: Karan Johar’. The reactions continued in the same vein, ‘Struggles of being Suhana Khan: 1. Having a sea facing Bungalow, so beach vacations aren’t exciting 2. Being so rich that you cannot decide which Rolex to wear 3. Not getting launched by Karan Johar even though you are 18’. Another one, ‘can u imagine suhana saying ‘I want to be on vogue!!!’ and srk doing that *deep dad breath* thing and making a few calls lollll’.
Miss. Khan is not new to spotlight and this move is being seen as her official entry into the glamour world and stardom. While one can clearly make out that Twitter is lashing out anger on this matter because of nepotism, star-kid tag, and injustice to the struggling actors, yet there were few who rushed to her rescue saying, ‘I don’t understand this outrage seeing Suhana in Vogue India Cover. SRK has earned everything what he is having today. What do you want that he should tell his daughter to go to every office early in the morning, be in the queue etc? Why the fcuk he has earned then?’ and ‘Wth is wrong with ppl hating on Suhana! She’s the blood of Shah Rukh Khan; The King.. @iamsrk. She turned 18 & obviously she will be the face of various magazines even before she even act. Actually, I thought she will be on an international cover. This’s nothing.’
Suhana, in her first ever interview, spoke about dealing with the vicious online abuse, ‘I still find it hard because people feel like they can judge you, especially on social media. Pictures from my private Instagram account get leaked. There are so many people talking about you. They don’t know you, and they don’t know what they’re talking about, but they’re just talking. And that can mess with your self-confidence. I keep telling myself that haters are going to hate, but I can’t honestly say that I don’t get upset by it. It’s annoying, but I keep telling myself other people have bigger problems’.
Karan Johar also came up with an interesting tweet, “Have seen her on stage and had my heart bursting with pride!! She is stunning, soulful and a bonafide talent! Welcome to the spotlight my darling! Even in its harshest moments it will envelop you with immense love….and thank you for never calling me UNCLE! Love you”.
Both the proud parents, Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan, took to social media to thank everyone involved in the launch of their daughter’s magazine debut with heartfelt messages and with her pictures and videos.
Facing backlash from netizens, Vogue India’s Instagram page has disabled comments on her photos/videos as of now.
