Where is the spider-man you ask? Look on top of the box office.
Before discussing any further let us just get straight-away to the very fact that the Marvel movie Into the Spider-Verse, has gained 97% on Rotten Tomatoes with almost 250 reviews. Critics’ reviews have been excellent, and audiences gave it a rare A-plus Cinema Score proving that there is a wide audience interest in big-screen animated versions of Marvel’s marquee superheroes.
This animation masterpiece is the highest December opening in the history for an animated movie. It made $35.4 million over its first three days in the United States. That sets a new all-time record for an animated movie released in December. Made for about $90 million, it represents Sony’s latest effort to mine the popularity of the Spider-Man mythos, which it has long licensed from Marvel. This is another financial win for the studio’s expanded Spider-Man universe strategy, following the blockbusters ‘Venom’ and ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming.’
The movie is an absolute visual feast that perfectly encapsulates the vibe of Miles Morales himself, high energy, artistic, brilliant. The film features an innovative animation style, both CGI and hand-drawn. The film is on its way to handily become the No. 1 film in North America while also scoring the biggest December opening ever for an animated movie. ‘We are playing to both families and fanboys. We’re an all-audience film,’ quoted Adrian Smith, Sony’s president of domestic distribution. Sony is already eyeing a Spider-Verse sequel and a separate spin-off.
Directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, and Rodney Rothman, Into the Spider-Verse tells the tale of a young Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) teaming up and being mentored by an alternate universe Peter Parker (Jake Johnson) and a bunch of other Spider-people ranging from Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) to Spider-Noir (Nic Cage, oh god yes, Nic Cage) to battle the notorious crime boss Kingpin (Live Schreiber)
Shot like a comic book, awesome sound effects, texturing and brilliant action sequence this movie is a must watch on the big screens with a popcorn tub. Please don’t wait at home for it to stream online, because you’re only killing its real vibe then.
