Food. We eat it every day. But how much do you know about it? Well, below you will find some interesting food facts that are guaranteed to make you lose your appetite.
Some are interesting, some will shock you and some are weird and some almost seem too crazy to be true. I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I did writing them.
1. Fruit stickers are edible!
Yes, you read it right. Now you don’t have to freak out when you take a bite into the sticker. It’s recommended to wash all the fruit before eating, but eating the stickers on fruit won’t hurt you.
2. Black pepper was a luxury in the middle ages!
In the middle ages, black pepper was a luxury and was so expensive. It was sometimes used to pay rent and taxes.
3. Carrots were originally purple!
A purple carrot would come as a major surprise for most people nowadays. There were also some yellow and white varieties, but orange carrots were rarely seen.
4. Grapes will explode if you put them in the microwave!
What happens when you cut a grape in almost half, and microwave it? As the microwave move across the grape, from one hemisphere to the other, this tiny remainder of grape skin quickly dries out and burns up, causing a spark.
5. You can make diamonds from peanut butter!
You’re probably thinking, what’s the catch? Well, it’s nothing major. Simply put, you have to recreate the conditions of the lower mantle of the Earth for weeks to create a 2/3mm wide diamond. That’s only 2,200 degrees centigrade. Our pipe dream of a peanut butter/diamond enterprise disappeared as quickly as it manifested.
6. The most stolen food in the world is cheese!
This is not good news for supermarkets. Definitely one of the more surprising facts in this series, the most stolen food in the world is in fact cheese. Around 4% of ALL the cheese made in the world gets stolen. There’s even a black market of stolen cheeses, but we didn’t tell you that.
7. Bananas are berries, but strawberries aren’t!
So it turns out that bananas are actually classed as berries, but strawberries aren’t. I bet that you didn’t know this one. Bananas, cucumbers, kiwis are all classed as berries. Strawberries, blackberries and raspberries are not. And now you will question everything you thought you knew.
