Known for his bespoke and ‘Space Age’ designs, French-Italian renowned designer Pierre Cardin took his last breath on Tuesday at the age of 98. The ambitious and visionary man was born in 1922 near Venice, Italy and emigrated to France where at the age of 17, he worked under a tailor specialising in women’s suits.
The man gave way to several landmark moves in the fashion industry, establishing his own fashion label in 1950 after working for Christian Dior for a brief time. The legendary man holds many first to his name becoming the first French designer to make ties with the market of China and holding a fashion show in Red Square, Moscow in a crowd of 200,000 in 1991.
Pierre had embraced globalization way ahead of anyone and entered the Indian market in the 1980s when the country was nascent to international brands. Many designers looked up to him and drew inspiration from his designing as well as marketing skills.
On his sad demise, Indian contemporary designer Tarun Tahlini took to his Instagram handle to give an ode to the great name of the designing industry. In his note, Tarun gave credit to Pierre for his entry into the fashion world.
International label Dior also paid the tribute to the fashion icon by sharing a picture of Pierre Cardin from the old days along with the words that read: “The House of Dior would like to pay tribute to #PierreCardin, an icon of creativity and reinvention who continually forged new paths in Haute Couture and ready-to-wear. The Space Age couturier started out his career as the head of our tailoring atelier alongside Monsieur Dior.”
