Joining the elite group, FC Barcelona’s Lionel Messi reaches the milestone of 700 career goals. And well, the captain hit the landmark in style, against Atletico Madrid.
Now, Messi has scored 630 goals for Barcelona and 70 for his national team of Argentina, which means that he’s also close to another special record. Popularly called as the GOAT, Messi just needs 14 more goals to surpass Pele’s landmark of 643 goals for a single club.
The six-time Ballon d’Or winner had gone three matches without a goal as he sat on 699 strikes for the club and country. Messi scored the 700 goals in a cheeky Panenka penalty against the best goalkeeper in the world, Jan Oblak.
Now, Messi joins Cristiano Ronaldo as the only active players to have reached 700 goals. But the Argentinian scored the goals in just 861 appearances, 112 matches lesser than Ronaldo. Messi does have an edge!
