Karl Lagerfeld, the world fashion designer, died at the American Hospital of Paris in Neuilly-sur-Seine after suffering from an illness for past few weeks. Members of the fashion industry are sharing grief over the legend’s departure. ‘Today the world lost a giant among men,’ said the editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine, Anna Wintour.
Born in Hamburg, the German origin designer dropped Otto from his original name Karl Otto Lagerfeld after his work started getting famous and as he started working for France. At the age of 17, Karl was working with Pierre Balmain, the famous fashion designer since 1914, as his assistant. Post Coco Channel’s death Karl’s designs, for the brand, gave a whole new life to the label. He worked hard simultaneously for Channel, Fendi, collaborations with HnM and his own label Karl Lagerfeld. The designer was always in news for his blunt statements and sharp criticism. 1. His rise to fame
Post 1982, Karl became a famous name as his designs were presented to the world and soon his beloved avant-garde designs, that were synonymous with luxury and opulence, were frequented by some of fashion’s most famous faces. 2. Diet-coke obsession
‘I drink Diet Coke from the minute I get up to the minute I go to bed. I can even drink it in the middle of the night, and I can sleep. I don’t drink coffee, I don’t drink tea, I drink nothing else,’ admitted Karl who is said to be consuming 10 cans a day. He also gave his passion to Coca Cola Company by designing Coca Cola Bottles.
3. Controversial diet and weight loss
In 2001, the designer said that he woke up one day with a feeling of embarrassment for his body, and that he wanted to dress differently, and thus he underwent a dramatic body transformation shedding 42 kilograms in just 13 months. 4. Non-techie with 300 iPod
Langford hated technology, so much that he did not even owe a smartphone and a computer. His normal days were spent in reading, sketching and designing yet it is said that he had an extensive tech collection which featured 300 iPods, each one programmed with different music. He even had a personal iPod for his beloved pet cat, who also has a famous social media following.
