Australian batsman Steve Smith has reached the second position with 913 points in the latest International Cricket Council (ICC) Test batsman rankings, while Indian skipper Virat Kohli still holds the number one position with 922 points. He is only nine ranking points behind Kohli.
Smith’s concussion has failed to halt his march towards the top spot on the ICC Test batting charts. He has reaffirmed why he is one of the world’s best batsman, by hitting two centuries in the first Test of the Ashes series (England vs Australia series), then scoring 92 in the second test at Lord’s, England. The Lord’s innings was overshadowed by a frightening blow to his neck after being struck by a bouncer bowled by England’s Jofra Archer.
For the third Test in the Ashes series, held in Leeds on 22 August, it is confirmed that Smith will not be a part of the playing eleven. Still, Smith has scored 378 runs at an average of 126 this series, being a major contributor to the victory.
