We all know how much love Bollywood has for patriotic movies. Throughout the years, Bollywood has told different stories and the same stories by different storytellers. From ‘Mother India’ to ‘Border’ to ‘Rang De Basanti’, we have seen many shades of storytelling- from loud to melodramatic.
This year, we saw creators come together to tell stories which were never heard before. Here are some recent movies to watch and celebrate India’s 73rd Independence Day that rides high on nationalism to create stellar pieces of visual extravaganza. Take a look:
1. Uri: The Surgical Strike
Aditya Dhar’s directorial debut starring Vicky Kaushal, Paresh Rawal and Yami Gautam created quite a stir after its release earlier this year. The movie revolves around the events of the surgical strike conducted by the Indian army on suspected Pakistani militants in retaliation to the 2016 Uri attack on an Indian army brigade headquarters in Jammu and Kashmir. The film went on to become a blockbuster and the catch phrase “How’s the Josh?” “High, Sir!” could be heard all around.
2. Kesari
Akshay Kumar starrer action war film ‘Kesari’ is based on the ‘Battle of Saragarhi’, between the British Indian Army of 21 soldiers and the Pashtun tribesmen of around 10,000 in a heroic last stand. This movie will definitely make you feel proud of our history.
3. The Ghazi Attack
Rana Daggubati and Kay Kay Menon’s movie documents the naval war between India and Pakistan which was fought under water in 1971 when Pakistan’s submarine PNS Ghazi mysteriously sunk. This movie will show the undercurrents of our country, making you patriotic and angry at the same time.
4. Mission Mangal
Multi starrer movie ‘Mission Mangal’, directed by Jagan Shakti, is based on real-life scientists, who contributed to India’s first interplanetary expedition, Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM), launched by Indian Research Space Organisation (ISRO) in 2013. The film features Akshay Kumar, Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, Sharman Joshi, Kirti Kulhari, Nithya Menen and H. G. Dattatreya in the lead roles. It is scheduled to be released today and has already created a lot of buzz.
5. Raazi
This spy thriller drama is an adaptation of novel called ‘Calling Sehmat’ which is a tale of the brave Indian RAW lady spy portrayed by Alia Bhatt. She is married into a family of Pakistani military officials on her father’s request to relay information to India, prior to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. One witnesses a story that has no mention in history and it’s not your normal loud patriotic Bollywood movie. The movie is a brilliantly crafted story of an Indian Wonder Woman who saved many lives by passing on information to the Indian army.
