From being banned in 2016, to becoming the undisputed king of badminton in 2019, Kento Momota has come a long way!
2019 is Momota’s year!
In the past 12 months, he had a record smashing performance, winning 11 titles that includes the World Championships, Asia Championships and All England Open. No men’s badminton player has won so many tournaments in any season.
The Japanese player has played 73 matches this year, losing just six times and everyone including himself are surprised with his blistering form. With this kind of a form, Momota won the last tournament of the year, defeating Indonesia’s Anthony Ginting at the BWF World Tour Finals in Guangzhou, China.
Ranked in 300’s position in 2017, Momota is currently world number one and it seems like there is no one to shake him off that position for a while. Also, Momota became the first Japanese man to win the singles title at the World Championships.
The left handed player has only one major individual title missing from his trophy haul, which is, the Olympic gold medal. His eyes are on it, and we are waiting for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
