Berlin-based singer-songwriter Ditty has released a new video for the single, ‘DUNYA (For Our Children)’ from her latest album KĀLĪ – that was released on recycled coloured vinyl as a limited edition pressing on March 21.
The 10-track bilingual album KĀLĪ, can be described as a ‘collection of songs exploring Ditty’s migrant past, race, gender, spirituality and the future – blending her signature songwriting with influences across the two continents she hops between’.
Ditty’s music combines personal reflection with social themes — particularly her commitment to environmental and climate advocacy – giving her artistry authenticity and meaning. She dresses her songs in sparse, haunting arrangements – an unplugged style full of rolling piano riffs, handclaps, chimes of a tambourine – that embrace the sounds of nature like bird song and chirping crickets.
And DUNYA, in that sense, is a Ditty song from start to finish. Written as a lament against the troubled times that we live in with war, exploitation of the Global South and genocide dominating headlines, ‘DUNYA’ paints a bleak picture of the future that man wants to leave his progeny. The video for the song has been shot in the verdure Himalayas with misty lakes and friendly dogs, presents a contrasting image of the world that Ditty sings about.
“I am deeply concerned about the world as it stands today,” says the New Delhi-born artist, who now calls Berlin home. “We live in a post-war, post-colonial world, however, the world is at war. Genocide against people continues, but also continues a huge war on natural resources, on water and oil. Hyper capitalism and dictatorship and billionaires are celebrated. Before our children can live, we have robbed them of clean water, unpolluted air, health, freedom and peace,” she adds.
Ditty’s first major tour across Germany covering 14 cities, starting later this week, is also incidentally called For Our Children.
