Trend of sports and fitness is slowly making its way through the Indian culture. With more people participating in sports activities and receiving appreciation nationwide, the whole taboo around sports not being a career option is diminishing. Marking the Birth Anniversary of legendary player Major Dhyan Chand, The Wizard of Hockey, National Sports Day is celebrated on 29 August, to encourage a spirit of sportsmanship and fitness in every individual’s life.

Every year the government is introducing new schemes to promote various sports and fitness activities. These schemes also provide support sport enthusiasts. This sports day PM Modi is inaugurating ‘Fit India Movement’ at Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex, New Delhi where he will be taking the fitness pledge along with the whole nation.

 

Along with PM, Minister of State of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Kiren Rijiju, has set up a committee of 28 members hailing from various Sports Associations and Federations with nationwide fitness promoter, Shilpa Shetty and Milind Soman.

 

Meanwhile Union Cabinet Minister for Textiles and Women and Child Development, Smriti Zubin Irani with Kiren Rijiju, paid her tribute to Major Dhyan Chand and also sent greetings to all the sportsperson.

 

India has witnessed some tremendous performances this year on various fields. One of the favourite sports of country, Cricket, though could not bring the World Cup, other athletes etched their names in the history of world sport in various categories. With some of the remarkable performances and determined sportspersons, India received ‘Gold pe Gold’. We also saw some breakthrough field execution by female athletes. With some old faces and many new faces coming into the limelight, India emerged as an all rounder in world class sports events.

Let’s have a look at female athletes who not only defied the stereotypes but also made India proud:

 

 

1. PV Sindhu

 

The 24-year-old ace shuttler PV Sindhu became the first Indian to win the World Badminton Championship title. Prior to the breathtaking performance at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, Sindhu suffered many losses. Erasing all those memories, the Hyderabad girl worked on herself and clinched the maiden title.

 

Sindhu is also the Highest paid female athlete of India earning mostly via various endorsements.

 

 

2. Hima Das

 

 

Known as Dhing Express, world saw Hima Das leaping from one gold to another in a month. The 19-year-old Sprinter hailing from the state of Assam has set National record in the 400m relay race last year. This year Hima won her first gold at Poznan Athletics Grand Prix in Poland in July and since then Hima did not stop.

 

 

3. Manasi Joshi

 

 

Manasi Joshi made India proud by winning her maiden title at the BWF Para Badminton World Championship that was held in Basel, Switzerland, recently. Along with getting congratulatory messages from worldwide, Vogue India put up a stunning photo of Manasi sending her warm wishes on her epic win.

4. Aishwarya Pissay

 

 

The Bengaluru off-road racer, Aishwarya Pissay made history by becoming the first ever Indian to win the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) Bajas World Cup in the women’s category at Varpalota, Hungary.

5. Elavenil Valarivan

 

Hailing from the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu, Elavenil won her maiden World Cup Gold in shooting at Rio de Janeiro. Earlier, Valarivan has won gold at the Junior World Championship in 2018.
