Legendary MC Mary Kom exited the Asia-Oceania Olympic Boxing Qualifiers with a bronze medal in the women’s 51kg event.
The boxer faced a huge disappointment after losing her semi-final bout. She put up a gritty fight against the Asian Games champion Chang Yuan but the Chinese defeated Mary Kom in the closely contested match.
The six time World Champion went against Philippines’ Irish Magno and seized a comfortable victory over her, 5-0. With this win, Mary Kom sealed a berth in the Tokyo Olympics as well.
In another semi-final, women’s 51kg world champion Huang Hsiao-Wen and Japan’s Tsukimi Namiki faced each other. But during the first round of the semis itself, Huang walked out of the match due to distress. This led to the Japanese Namiki to move towards the women’s 51kg finals and by default, Mary Kom claimed the bronze medal.
By sheer hard work and luck, Mary Kom not only won a bronze medal but she has also qualified for the 2020 Olympics. A good tournament for her indeed!
