Farside Collective Foundation, an independent Artist-run space in Leh & Round them Oranges, Jaipur have come together to create India’s first Artbook festival for independently made books and zines. To grow the self-publishing culture and challenge the conventional publishing culture, the festival brings together independent publishers, gallery presses, and bookshops, as well as individual artists and collectives under one roof to indulge in artist talks, workshops, and interactive exhibits.
A confluence of books, art, music and workshops, the festival is an initiative to highlight the importance of art and literature in today’s era. The first edition of this festival will feature art-book showcases by publishers and artists from across India, Pakistan, France, Singapore, and the USA. Art-book enthusiasts can find everything from Indian comic book creators, to handpicked books by a French publisher, gallery, and bookshop, and dive deep into socio-political explorations by photographers and zine-makers from the subcontinent.
The two-day festival brings together a plethora of events including special exhibitions, book launches, talks/panel discussions and film screenings. On its first day, the fest will showcase speaker series – Bandarbat X Guftgu followed by discussions with Swiss artists, Eveline Wuethrich & Johannes Willi, who will discuss the role of photography and its relationship with other media. On the second day, a panel discussion will take place with visual artist and photographer Kaamna Patel who will talk about her experience of archival work and processes of editing. The festival promises to create a platform for everything from hand-made zines to photo-books.
