4th March 2024 – 16th March 2024 | Dhoomimal Art Centre
Dhoomimal Art Centre is delighted to announce an exhibition showcasing the illustrious ‘Calcutta Painters,’ a distinguished collective of artists originating from Kolkata. This event marks a momentous sixty-year journey, during which the group has played a pivotal role in shaping the modern art landscape of India.
Established in 1964, the ‘Calcutta Painters stand as a testament to visionary artists committed to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression. Their dedication to nurturing the growth of art and artists domestically, while making significant contributions to the global art community, remains unwavering. Currently, Mr. Jogen Chowdhury serves as the president, with Mr. Sudip Banerjee holding the position of vice president within the group.
Emerging from the vibrant art scene of New Delhi, this esteemed collective has been a cornerstone in shaping the avant-garde art narrative in India. The artistic ethos and approach, initially championed by luminaries like Bijon Chowdhury, Rabin Mandal, Prakash Karmakar, and Nikhil Biswas, continue to resonate even after six decades. In celebration of this remarkable journey, Dhoomimal Art Centre is thrilled to present an exhibition featuring the works of the group’s current members, paying homage to the enduring legacy established by its founding visionaries.
One of the showing artists is Mr. Jogen Chowdhury who is widely acknowledged to be, the master of the unbroken lines. The drawings in the exhibit feature female figures intriguingly devoid of sexuality or provocative postures. Vulnerability emanates through textured skin and lucid lines, showcasing the artist’s unique approach. The deliberate confinement within a smaller space reflects Chowdury’s admiration for humans and nature. This brief captures the essence of a thought-provoking and distinctly crafted artwork, where vulnerability meets unconditional portrayal, creating a vivid and impactful narrative.
Subrata Ghosh’s series of exhibits centres around different manifestations of the seas, providing a glimpse into his unique perspective on life. It’s as if everything in our lives is adorned with a touch of romance. We often hold onto history, mythology, and societal beliefs. However, when the tide of time washes everything away, we speak of harsh realities. We oscillate between romanticism and reality, trying to find a balance.
Mohit Jain, Director of Dhoomimal Art Centre is proud to exhibit this prestigious group, he says “It brings me great joy to showcase the Calcutta Painters group, a dedicated force that has been instrumental in shaping the modern art scene since 1964. I am thrilled to underscore the invaluable contribution such artistic collectives make, not only in nurturing the development of art and artists within our borders but also in making substantial contributions to the global art community. As the ‘Calcutta Painters’ marks its sixty-year milestone, it stands as a formidable presence in our nation’s cultural landscape, embodying a rich legacy in the realm of art.”
In essence, ‘Calcutta Painters’ has forged a legacy of unwavering dedication and artistic excellence, leaving an indelible mark on the canvas of India’s cultural heritage.
