Batting first, England showed a strong dominance on field since the first ball and with their captain Joe Root hitting 218 runs, the team put up a score of 578 in the first innings. Indian bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Ravinchandran Ashwin failed to create pressure although they picked three wickets each.
The batting lineup of India, from Captain Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma to opener Shubman Gill and Vice-captain Ajinka Rahane could not contribute to the big run chase and gave up wickets early on in the match. Rishabh Pant played a powerful innings but lost his wicket at 91, but the hopes were held high by Washington Sundar who scored 85.
Coming to the second innings, Joe Root once again hit 40 runs and declared the score at 178. The Indian team had to chase 300+runs but failed to do so on the last day of the first match even after Kohli scored 72 and Gill hit a half-century.
Losing by a huge margin, team India will now take on England in the second Test match which will also be played once again in Chennai, starting 13 February.
