On 25 June 1983, exactly 37 years ago, the Kapil Dev-led Indian side created history by winning the maiden World Cup title. The team uplifted the cup after beating West Indies in the final at Lord’s, England. This landmark win changed Indian cricket forever and became the leading sport of the country.

Batting first, India put a score of 183 on the board with Srikkanth top-scoring in the innings. The target seemed achievable for the Caribbean team but the Indian bowlers rose to the occasion. The team took wickets at regular intervals and this triggered the Windies getting bowled out at 140.

Celebrating 37 years of the historic World Cup winning moment, members of the ’83 winning team took to Twitter to explain the significance of this event. Take a look:

In 2011, under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, India lifted the World Cup for the second time after 28 long years. The Men in Blue defeated Sri Lanka on Indian soil, Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to create the greatest win in the Indian cricketing history.
