The first award category was of Physiology or Medicine, given to three scientists, British born scientist Michael Houghton along with two Americans Harvey J. Alter and Charles M. Rice for the discovery of Hepatitis C virus, a major global health problem that causes cirrhosis and liver cancer.

In Stockholm, Thomas Perlmann, head of the Nobel Committee announced the winners while it was chosen by Sweden’s Karolinska Institute. The joint winners of the Nobel Prize for Medicine have made it possible for one to know the cause of blood-borne, chronic hepatitis while allowing highly sensitive blood tests and new antiviral drugs to save millions of millions.
Till 12 October, the Nobel Prize will be given to people who have done outstanding work in the fields of physics, chemistry, literature, peace and economics. Hang on there!
