Bangalore | 2026: Bangalore-based Artisera presents Intersections, a solo exhibition by senior Indian artist Ashok Bhowmick, which will be on view from 26 September 2026 to 5 November 2026. Presented in collaboration with Dhoomimal Gallery (est. 1936), New Delhi, the exhibition marks Ashok Bhowmick’s first solo exhibition in Bangalore.
Born in 1953, Ashok Bhowmick has spent more than five decades developing a distinctive visual language, most immediately recognisable through his extraordinary command of cross-hatching. Thousands of individual lines accumulate across his surfaces, building density, shadow, form and light. Yet the line is only the starting point.
Intersections brings together recurring encounters within Bhowmick’s practice: between observation and imagination, figuration and abstraction, precision and emotion, and the individual and the society to which they belong. At the centre of his work remains the human figure, transformed through an intensely personal language of line and form.
The exhibition brings together paintings, drawings, and sculptures spanning some of the artist’s most significant subjects. Workers, coal miners, birds, animals and recurring figures such as ‘Amina’ inhabit Bhowmick’s pictorial world, while his sculptural practice allows familiar forms to move from accumulated lines into mass, contour and volume.
Rather than presenting Bhowmick’s practice chronologically, Intersections draws connections across different periods, subjects and mediums, revealing the continuities that have shaped his work over decades.
For Artisera, the exhibition is also part of a larger commitment to bringing significant artistic practices to Bangalore and creating opportunities for audiences in the city to engage with artists whose work deserves sustained attention.
Ashok Bhowmick’s career has included solo exhibitions across India and internationally, including presentations in Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Lahore, Tokyo, Sydney, New York and Karachi. His practice extends beyond painting into sculpture, writing and sustained engagement with literature, theatre and the wider cultural landscape.
With Intersections, Artisera brings this expansive practice into a focused presentation, inviting viewers to look closely at what accumulates between Ashok Bhowmick’s lines: not merely image and form, but also observation, memory and human experience.
Reflecting on this, Uday Jain, Director of Dhoomimal Gallery, said:
“Ashok Bhowmick is an artist who has spent over five decades mastering his craft. Cross-hatching is central to his work, but it never feels deliberate or imposed. It flows naturally through the image, creating an extraordinary play of light and shadow. What makes his practice so compelling is the depth that reveals itself slowly. The longer one spends with his work, the more one begins to see in it, whether the subject is a human figure, a puppet, an animal or a landscape. There is a strength and presence to these works that continues to draw the viewer back.”
Varun Backliwal, Founder and CEO of Artisera, added:
“We have wanted to bring Ashok Bhowmick’s work to Bangalore for quite some time, and it is particularly special to present his first solo exhibition in the city. He has built an extraordinary practice over more than five decades, and Intersections gives us the opportunity to present some of his finest works to audiences here. Just as importantly, this exhibition reflects something we strongly believe in at Artisera: galleries do not always have to work in isolation. Collaborating with like-minded galleries such as Dhoomimal allows us to bring strong exhibitions to new audiences and, collectively, contribute to a larger and more engaged art ecosystem.”

About Dhoomimal Gallery
Established in 1936, Dhoomimal Gallery is one of India’s pioneering institutions for modern and contemporary Indian art. Founded by Shri Ram Babu in Connaught Place, the gallery evolved from an art and stationery store into what is recognised as India’s first gallery dedicated to modern Indian art, becoming an important platform for artists such as Jamini Roy, B.C. Sanyal, F.N. Souza and Krishen Khanna.
Under the leadership of Ravi Jain, the gallery expanded its cultural programme across visual art, music, dance, poetry and theatre, while the Ravi Jain Memorial Foundation, established by Uma Jain, has supported over 100 young artists.
