Receiving overwhelming support from the UN Member States, India has been elected as the non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC). India garnered 184 votes out of the 192 ballots cast in the General Assembly to win the election for the non-permanent seat in the powerful UNSC.

In a tweet, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador TS Tirumurti stated that the vision and inspiring global leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi especially during COVID-19 along with the outcome of the strong campaign led by External Affairs Minister of India Dr S Jaishankar, helped India become UNSC’S non-permanent member.

India’s two year term for 2021-22 will begin on 1 January 2021, making it the eighth time for India to sit at the UN high table. With the membership coming in at a critical juncture, India is confident that the nation will continue to provide leadership and a new orientation for a reformed multilateral system in the present and post COVID-19 period.

Along with India, Ireland, Mexico and Norway also won the non-permanent seats at the UN Security Council elections but Canada lost the elections. India will sit in the most powerful UN organ along with five permanent members China, France, Russia, UK and USA as well as non-permanent members including Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Estonia, Niger, Tunisia and Vietnam.

Expressing gratitude, PM Narendra Modi tweeted about this big news. Have a look:
