Laughing PV Sindhu with tears in her eyes, couldn’t believe as to what she had achieved. With moist eyes, she said, “Finally, I have become a National champion!”, realising her mistake, she repeated her words slowly to let it sink and said, “World Champion!” For one last time with full feels, she said, “World champion!”

In a game of 38 minutes, Sindhu thrashed Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara with a score of 21-7, 21-7, to win the gold. Giving her opponent no time to think or react, Sindhu went all out from the start with devastating smashes.

The opening game rally was the only moment which gave some hope to world no.4 Okuhara. After that, Sindhu was unstoppable and before anyone could realise what is happening, the game was over. The 24 year-old player did not leave any stone unturned while stomping to her first gold medal after two bronzes and two silvers.

Sindhu’s savage hitting is unseen in any match or tournament for women’s singles title. The Hyderabad girl erased memories of all prior losses of 2019 and became India’s first ever badminton World Champion.

She dedicated her gold medal to her mother, P Vijaya, as it’s her birthday and no better gift for a mother than a gold medal by the daughter could be given. She is also the second woman shuttler to have five medals and the third to have medals in all three colours.

Previously, in this tournament to reach the finals, she defeated World no.2 Tai Tzu Ying in the quarter final and World no.3 Chen Yu Fei in the semi-final.

After all the heartbreak, it’s time for Sindhu to rejoice. She has successfully changed the colour of her World Championship medal, even though it took her a couple of tries to get it done. This gold is the result of every loss and all her hard work. After her win, messages poured in for PV Sindhu on social media.

Meanwhile, B. Sai Praneeth won bronze in men’s singles in the BWF World Championship.

In Para World badminton championship, Manasi Joshi won her maiden title in women’s singles and Pramod Bhagat – Manoj Sarkar clichéd gold in men’s doubles.

Also, Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal is all set to make his Grand Slam debut in the US Open against Roger Federer at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Queens, New York City on Tuesday. The 22 year old sportsman is living his moment and couldn’t have asked for a better way to start his Grand Slam Journey.
