One of the most talked about concepts in recent times is sustainability and this year sustainable fashion has gained momentum. With Paris aiming to be the sustainable fashion capital of the world by 2024, conscious fashion is now no longer restricted to being a CSR activity but a lifestyle choice being encouraged globally. Closer to home, the Lakme Fashion Week dedicated a day to Sustainable Fashion celebrating eco-friendly processes and upcycled designs, creating awareness for the need to go green. If you’re a fashionista or a sustainable-lifestyle enthusiast, here are the top five trends in a sustainable fashion to watch out for this season. Vaishali Karad, Founder and Principal Designer of Paashh – Pune’s first multi-concept store encouraging sustainability, gives five top trends in sustainable fashion:

1. Breathable natural fabrics:

Natural materials such as linen, Mul, Cotton and innovative fabrics made from hemp, pineapple, sea-weed are perfect for the season. Also, as they are biodegradable, it’s the perfect initiative one can take in the journey of sustainability.

2. Stripes:

Dominating all fashion weeks this year, we can’t have enough of this trend! Stripes have entered the green fashion segment too and how! With printed stripes in naturally dyed pigments or handwoven stripes in the fabric structure, one can make a style statement with this classic.

3. Hand embroidered highlights:

Slow fashion has become more interesting this year with handcrafted embroidery used in innovative ways. Floral fabric embroidery, traditional crafts like got-patti, threadwork, appliqué are some of the key trends for the season.

4. Sorbet hues:

Sustainable fashion does not mean boring! Add in a fun dash of color by using icy blue, blush pink, buttermilk yellow, and pistachio green – sorbet colors that are ruling the international runways this year!

5. Ruffles:

Back in a big way, ruffles are versatile – be it sleeves, pants or collars, this trend can elevate the entire look of the garment. Perfect as an addition to boring formal wear or an all-out vacation look, ruffles are in your sustainable fashion wardrobe!
