In a setback to the Olympic hopes of several international shuttlers, the 2021 German Open has been cancelled as the local organizers did not have any other option due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions and complications in Germany.

The BWF Super 300 event was scheduled to be played from 9 March to 14 March in Mülheim an der Ruhr in Germany but has been put off. This decision was made by the German Badminton Association in consultation and agreement with the Badminton World Federation.

Indian Players like Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth along with the mixed doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa will be upset with this decision as the German Open was originally one of the qualifying events for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.

Now, the international badminton players should prepare for the Swiss Open 2021 which will be staged at St. Jakobshalle Basel in Switzerland from 2 March to 7 March. This BWF tournament is also a part of qualifying rounds for the 2021 Olympics.
