Soha Ali Khan became mommy last year and her world has changed ever since. Her daughter Inaaya Naumi Kemmu is the apple of her eye. Soha’s cheeks pink up as she talks about holding her bundle of joy. She goes on sharing her various emotions and experiences of being a mother.

The Journey of New Happiness

She started off saying how her emotions fluctuated, ‘when you undergo scans, you’re aware someone is inside you. You see the baby taking form. But nothing prepares you for the joy you experience when you first hold your newborn in your arms. You’ve created a life and all this has happened without any laboratory or engineering. It’s just Kunal (Kemmu) and me and then this person comes out with 10 fingers, 10 toes, and a perfect human being!’

She also mentions she’s no longer in control of her life, which now revolves around Inaaya. ‘She controls when I eat, what I eat, my sleep, my TV viewing – she’s the boss,’ laughs Soha.

‘A new mother goes through ups and downs, you get blues, you get depressed, you feel bad as everyone is going out to party and you’ve got to be at home. You can’t do certain things. I tried to remain balanced about it. But I’ve had breakdowns in the early weeks,’ she confides.

A Debutante Author Rose

It’s admirable that amidst the various joys and pains of being a first-time mother, Soha found time to write a book. Titled The Perils of Being Moderately Famous, it’s a book containing stories about growing up in a family where everyone was more famous than her. Her father, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi was one of the most stylish Indian cricketers, mother Sharmila Tagore was a top marquee star, and brother Saif Ali Khan is a top star currently and so is sister-in-law Kareena Kapoor Khan.

She explained about the book what it’s like to be related to such well-known people. ‘They are part of my identity. It also talks about being famous and being an actor in India where Bollywood is such a big industry. One can easily believe the world that revolves around you and there’s nothing else out there. People often go through their lives imagining that,’ she reveals. Saif and she share the same kind of dry English humour and Soha informs that he liked those parts where she’s described the various journeys taken together as a family.

Soha maintains she’s fortunate that she doesn’t have to work for a living and can treat in her passion. ‘I’m lucky to have financial security. I do work that I want to do. It needn’t be a big-budget film and opposite a big hero. It should be a role that I enjoy doing. Otherwise, I can sit at home or go off on a holiday and do things that I find interesting,’ she says not before adding, ‘but I’m ambitious. There’s still a lot to achieve.’

Soha has recently turned producer and will produce her first biopic under Renegade Films. Here’s wishing her a great happy birthday.
