Snap, the parent company of Snapchat, recently launched its upgraded and redesigned version of Augmented Reality (AR) Sunglasses ‘Spectacles 3’. A sleek new design and an added HD camera to create depth perception is a limited release by the company, representing Snap’s effort to build a new computing platform centered on the face.

With a price tag of $380, twice as expensive as last year’s model, the high end version is meant to appeal to a smaller group of fashion forward creative users. The glasses’ main feature is a second camera, which enables ‘Spectacles’ to capture depth for the first time. Snap has built a variety of new 3D effects that take advantage of the device’s new depth perception ability.

The glasses will be available in two colors, the ‘Carbon’ (black) and the ‘Mineral’ (rose gold) shades. They have a lightweight steel frame, adjustable tips, and tinted lenses for protection from the sun.

Like its earlier editions, ‘Spectacles’ will allow easy capturing of the moments by tapping a button on top of the glasses. After syncing them to the Android or iOS devices, users can edit the images or videos, and share them over various platforms.

According to the Company, users will be able to capture 70 videos and more than 200 photos on a single charge. To fully charge the AR sunglasses, it would take 75 minutes, and the case can be recharged with a USB C type cable. The internal storage of 4GB can hold upto 100 videos or 1,200 photos. Photos are stored at a resolution of 1,642*1,642 pixels and videos at 1,216 *1,216.

Unfortunately, photos taken with ‘Spectacles’ won’t get transferred automatically to the Snapchat account, adding a big drawback to the company’s latest product. The high price of ‘Spectacles 3’ is likely to limit its use, particularly among high school and college students who make up Snapchat’s core user base.

Inspired by the human eye, ‘Spectacles 3’ is available for pre-order on the official E-commerce site of Spectacles. The AR glasses will be available from November this year.
