MUMBAI, JULY 2026: ‘Morning Ragas – A Unique Experience of Rare Ragas’, a concert conceptualised and curated by Pancham Nishad and presented by GRACE Foundation, will be held on Sunday, July 12, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Ravindra Natya Mandir, Prabhadevi, Mumbai.

Conceived as an initiative to bring rare and seldom-heard morning ragas back to the concert stage, the series celebrates the extraordinary richness of Hindustani classical music through a thoughtfully curated repertoire. The inaugural Mumbai concert will be headlined by veteran Hindustani classical vocalist Suhas Vyas, the distinguished disciple and son of the legendary Padma Bhushan Pandit C.R. Vyas.

The concert will also feature narration by vocalist Sharvari Vaidya, offering insights into the origin, structure, and distinctive character of each raga, making the presentation deeply engaging and immersive for both seasoned listeners and newcomers.

Explaining the vision behind the initiative, Shashi Vyas, Founder of GRACE Foundation, said: “The idea for Morning Ragas was born in Bengaluru, where we launched the series in October 2022 as a bi-monthly initiative. The overwhelming response from audiences reaffirmed our belief that there is a growing appreciation for thoughtfully curated concerts featuring rare morning ragas. That encouraged us to bring the series to Mumbai as a quarterly initiative. We endeavor to preserve and present these rare ragas in a manner that is both authentic and accessible. By combining performance with narration, we hope to deepen the audience’s understanding and appreciation of this rich musical heritage.”

The inaugural presentation will feature six rarely performed morning ragas—Ahiri Lalat, Dev Gandhar, Dugam Hindol, Varathi Todi, Salang, and Jogia Asavari—each reflecting a distinctive melodic identity and demanding years of rigorous talim (training) and sustained riyaz (practice).

For Veteran Vocalist Suhas Vyas, the concert is a continuation of a lifelong musical journey rooted in tradition: “Morning concerts themselves have become increasingly rare. These ragas demand years of dedicated talim and riyaz before they can be presented with conviction. I consider it my responsibility to share this rich musical heritage with today’s listeners.”

One of the highlights of the programme is Dugam Hindol, a raga conceived by Padma Bhushan Pandit C.R. Vyas after extensive research into Raga Hindol. “My father believed that tradition and innovation should complement each other rather than exist in opposition. Presenting Dugam Hindol is both a privilege and a tribute to his musical vision,” says Vyas.

Recalling a memorable moment from an early music conference, Suhas Vyas shared an enduring lesson from the legendary Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur, who once readily accepted an impromptu request from Pandit C.R. Vyas to render Jogia Asavari on stage. The maestro took the stage without hesitation and rendered the rare raga with complete authority. “That single incident taught me what true preparedness means. A great musician does not prepare only for a concert; he prepares for a lifetime. That lesson continues to guide my approach to music and performance.”
