Indian sports has hit the purple patch with July turning to be a successful month with the gold spree showing no signs of slowing down. The latest medals are from the 21 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championships held in Cuttack, Odisha. As hosts, India did a clean sweep by claiming all the seven gold medals on offer, on Monday.

Harmeet Desai won the men’s singles after beating Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, in a hard-fought final to claim the men’s singles title. After being down initially, he made a comeback to outwit his opponent in a seven-game contest.

In women singles, Ayhika Mukherjee won her maiden gold in the championships, thrashing former national champion Madurika Patkar.

Later on in men’s doubles, Anthony Amalraj and Manav Thakkar claimed the gold by stunning Sathiyan Gnanasekaran and Sharath Kamal.

Defeating Sreeja Akula and Mousumi Paul, Pooja Sahasrabudhe and Krittwika Sinha Roy won the women’s doubles crown.

However, no individual could replicate the gold-winning performance in other events.

The domination of the paddlers at the championships was known after all the finals featured only Indians, making it more of a national event than an international one. In the final analysis, India won seven gold — the best ever haul — five silver and three bronze medals to be the table toppers.

We are proud of you, Indian paddlers!
