Today, when you open Google Search Engine, you will find a doodle representation of a woman making her way through the world, leading many others like her. Her saree is flowing, giving an illusion of a cape which can clad a superhero. Well, Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddi indeed was a superwoman of India who broke many norms of the society.

On 133rd Birth Anniversary of Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddi, Google chose to pay tribute to her, using the illustration created by Bangalore-based artist Archana Sreenivasan, writing, “Today’s #GoogleDoodle celebrates Indian educator, surgeon, lawmaker, & reformer Muthulakshmi Reddi, the first woman to work as a surgeon in an Indian government hospital & who devoted herself to public health & fighting inequality.”

Defying her parents’ plan, Dr. Reddi chose to go for higher education and became the first female student to attend Madras Medical College. Later, Reddi joined Madras Legislative Council, becoming the first woman legislature of India where she worked to raise the legal age of marriage, abolish Devadasi system, and woman exploitation.

Dr. Reddi, who was born in 1886 in Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu, constantly broke down the barriers throughout her life, devoted herself for improving public health, combating gender inequality and transforming the lives of people through education.

She also founded Adayar Cancer Institute, Chennai, in 1954, one of the most respected cancer institutes of the world. In 1956, Reddi was awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India. On Monday, The Government of Tamil Nadu announced her birth anniversary to be celebrated as ‘Hospital Day’ every year.
