If you’ve been spending hours behind a computer screen, say hello to the newest skin aggressor on the block – blue light, also known as HEV or High Energy Visible Light. According to dermatologists, HEV light is emitted from electronic devices like smartphones, laptops, computer screens and can penetrate more deeply than UV rays.

Prolonged exposure to blue light can accelerate the oxidation process which can further trigger inflammation and damage to the skin barrier causing aging, fine lines, pigmentation, dullness, and uneven skin tone.

Research says that while blue light was said to disrupt sleep cycles and affect eyesight, it’s effects on skin is much more adverse. Blue light contributes to melasma and hyperpigmentation, which is why some people experience worse acne on the side where they hold their phones.

Dermatologists recommend using the dimmest-possible setting on your phones, tablets, and computer screens and switching to a hands-free when getting on calls. Limiting your screen time may not be a reality, since most jobs require you to be on a computer, prepping your skin with the right products can go a long way in defending your skin from blue light damage.

Most sunscreens don’t help against blue-light, but switching to one with iron-oxide is a good idea. Since most of our waking hours are spent staring at screens, whether at home or at work, smart make-up products with antioxidants and Vitamin C can help repair and restore. Packed with antioxidants, look for ingredients like Jojoba Oil, RoseHip oil, and Apricot oil that can be wonderful for your skin. Vitamin C oil is one of the best ingredients to reduce discolouration, promise even skin tone, and give you a natural glow.
