Bringing Movement and Energy into Rainy Days
Rainy season is a great time to sit back, refresh the mind and make more time for the home. Activities in the outdoors will be less frequent, but it will still be important to keep moving to stay healthy and vital. Yoga is an easy and effective means of staying active at home. Stretching, breathing awareness and balanced movements enhance flexibility, circulation and allow the body to be light and full of energy.
In yogic science, movement is recommended to promote balance and harmony between the body, breath and mind. Just 20 minutes a day can yield long-term positive physical health and emotional balance.
1. Tadasana (Mountain Pose)
Formation
Place feet together and maintain straight spine. Rest arms against body and distribute body weight evenly on both feet. Raise both arms up high and stretch all body parts up while you breathe in. Pause for a couple breaths, then slowly lower the arms.
Benefits
Tadasana helps to correct posture, strengthen legs, and align body. It helps to improve balance and circulation. This posture also helps to establish a sense of base and stabilize the body for further yoga practice.
Do’s and Don’ts
Shoulders should remain relaxed, breathing should be normal. Stretch comfortably, not too much of an extension of the heels unless balance is maintained.
2. Utkatasana (Chair Pose)
Formation
Feet together. Gently bend knees as if sitting on a chair, with both arms raised up. Maintain a long spine, lifted chest and continue to hold this position with smooth breathing before standing back up.
Benefits
Utkatasana is strengthening to thighs, hips, knees and core muscles. It helps to keep the joints stable, helps to improve endurance and activates the whole body. Practice also promotes good circulation and posture.
Do’s and Don’ts
Continue to have knees directly over the feet and straight back. Gradually get into the pose, and breathe in a comfortable way.
3. Marjariasana–Bitilasana (Cat-Cow Stretch)
Formation
Start on all fours. Breathe in as you gently arch back and lift chest. Breathe out as you round spine and pull chin toward chest. Slowly maintain movement, using the breath.
Benefits
This slow pace sequence helps loosen the spine, promotes good posture and helps to eliminate stiffness in the back and shoulders. It also helps to promote smooth breathing and improve coordination of movement and breath.
Do’s and Don’ts
Take slow breaths and move slowly with each inhale and exhale. Keep weight balanced between both hands and knees.
4. Vrikshasana (Tree Pose)
Formation
Hold a straight posture with one foot resting on the inside of the opposite knee and/or calf. Start palms together in front of chest or lift palms up over head. Stay on one breath and concentrate on one thing at a time. Repeat on other side.
Benefits
Vrikshasana enhances balance, is strengthening for legs, and is a concentration exercise. It increases body sensibility and stability and helps to bring mental calm.
Do’s and Don’ts
If extra support is desired, practice close to a wall. Maintain a stable standing leg and take a natural breath during the stance.
