Choosing My Path
My journey began at a point of real professional clarity during a time of global uncertainty. Growing up, I nurtured a strong creative inclination, which eventually led me to pursue product design at Nottingham Trent University in the UK. However, the path to founding my firm wasn’t linear; it was sparked by the pandemic. I spent eight months redesigning my own residence and that project became the unintentional catalyst for my career. When I shared the results, the organic interest was immediate. I realized then that my true calling wasn’t just in product design, but in creating high-end residential sanctuaries. There was no roadmap, but the response from clients validated that there was a massive, underserved market for the classical, European-inspired interiors I personally cherished.
Embracing Authenticity
Transitioning into luxury interior design wasn’t just about starting a business; it was about defining a singular aesthetic. I found myself pushing back against the contemporary, minimalist trends that dominated the landscape. Instead, I chose to embrace a deep, maximalist perspective rooted in classical French and Victorian architectural details. For me, the home is a vessel for emotion and energy rather than just a functional space. By integrating nature-aligned ratios and classic architectural elements like vaulted ceilings, I’ve been able to move toward what I call “cosmic interior design.” Choosing to focus on ornate moldings and timeless details wasn’t just a design preference; it was a commitment to authenticity in a market saturated with “safe” minimalism.
Redefining Luxury
When people ask about my niche, the heavy focus on classical, ornate interiors, I clarify that it wasn’t a marketing strategy; it was simply how I lived. I saw a void: there wasn’t enough design inspiration that celebrated maximalism and classical grandeur in the modern Indian home. To me, luxury isn’t about rigid functionality; it’s about fostering the emotional well-being of my clients. I don’t see current industry trends as things to strictly follow, but as a base to build upon. My work is designed to be an extension of the client’s own personal journey, proving that you can participate in modern luxury while staying true to values of heritage, classical beauty, and intentionality.
Rising Above Skepticism
Visibility in the design world invites opinions and in the early stages, that often manifested as skepticism. I entered a male-dominated vendor industry at a young age and I was often met with doubt. Over time, I’ve learned to focus on my output rather than the noise. I have a simple policy: I engage with the work and the vision and I let the results speak for themselves. I am interested in building a legacy for the clients who feel truly seen in the spaces I create. Today, I manage a team of 11 full-time professionals and overseeing 15,000 to 20,000 square-foot estates is my answer to that early skepticism.
Looking Ahead
The demand for classical, high-end design is no longer just a boutique trend; it is a globally relevant force. Seeing my firm scale from boutique residential projects to expansive luxury estates and working with high-profile clients like the family of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, Nidhi Dutta and Azhar Iqubal shows how far we’ve come. I’m moving forward with a vision that extends beyond residential projects. My goal is to transition Aashi Gupta Designs into the hospitality sector, bringing the same level of classical elegance and energetic intentionality to larger public spaces. Ultimately, I hope to be remembered as someone who showed that ambition, classical artistry and personal values can coexist beautifully and that you never have to trade your unique vision for success.
