Architect and designer, Sona Reddy’s solo exhibition, ‘Rooted’ brings together furniture, textiles and objects inspired by nature

Known for her layered, sculptural approach to architecture, interiors and collectible design, Hyderabad-based architect and designer Sona Reddy presents Rooted at 47-A, Mumbai. A culmination of years of learning, collecting and making, the exhibition unfolds through fragments of observation gathered over time. An illustrated botany book of flowers, the rhythm of Madras checks, and the colours, textures and visual language encountered in everyday life become points of departure, gradually distilled into a contemporary collection of furniture and objects.

Rather than arriving fully formed, each idea evolves through the knowledge of many hands. Passing through workshops, craft traditions and material disciplines, it gathers new perspectives while remaining true to its original idea. Rooted embraces the nuances of handcraft, where time, material and making leave their imprint on every object.

Rooted is a celebration of Indian making, revealing a creative landscape where people, materials and craft traditions continue to shape contemporary design.

Highlights from the exhibition include

The Rosa Collection captures the fleeting beauty of a blooming flower in materials chosen to endure. Handcrafted in Jaisalmer stone, each piece is enriched with custom ceramic roses and delicate glass inlays. Rather than recreating a flower, the collection preserves its presence allowing botanical forms to become lasting companions within everyday spaces.

Drawing from the layered beauty of a flourishing garden, the Floral Tapestry transforms painting into textile art. Each composition begins as a hand-painted artwork on canvas before skilled artisans meticulously reinterpret every brushstroke through intricate silk-thread embroidery on delicate organza. What begins as pigment on canvas is gradually translated into thread, preserving the spontaneity of the original artwork while giving it an entirely new material expression.

A rose blooms only for a moment, yet its beauty often lingers in memory. The Pink Rose Collection gives that memory a permanent form through Indian Pink marble, handcrafted ceramic roses, and delicate glass inlays. Rooted in craftsmanship, each piece transforms a fleeting natural form into an enduring object designed to be lived with and cherished.

Celebrating the enduring legacy of Channapattna woodcraft, these handcrafted frames showcase the precision and artistry of a tradition passed down through generations of artisans. Carefully preserved botanical illustrations from 1834 are thoughtfully housed within each frame, allowing historic floral studies to be experienced as collectible artworks that bridge heritage, craftsmanship, and timeless design.

Sona Reddy is the founder and principal architect of Sona Reddy Studio, a Hyderabad-based practice. Guided by a sensitive engagement with form, material and light, her work is shaped by a layered, sculptural approach that draws from craft, cultural memory and the visual language of everyday life. Working closely with artisans and makers, she creates architecture, interiors and objects that are rooted in context and contemporary in expression.

47-A is a venue for art, craft & design.Set in the beautiful Khotachi Wadi, one of the original villages of Bombay in the culturally historic area of Girgaum, 47-A occupies a restored 19th-century Portuguese-style house. The ground floor of the house now serves as the gallery, providing a distinctive setting for exhibitions that celebrate art, craft and design.
