The Berklee-trained singer brings his own take to Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh’s classic
New Delhi, September 2026: Singer, songwriter and producer Viraj Bahri released ‘Tum Ko Dekha’, his reimagination of the classic Hindi song, in collaboration with Saregama, on Saturday, 19 September 2026. Within its first few days, the song’s video has crossed 200,000 views on YouTube.
A new take on ‘Tum Ko Dekha To Yeh Khayal Aaya’, originally sung by Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh, with music by Kuldeep Singh and lyrics by Javed Akhtar, the release brings the familiar melody to a new generation through Viraj’s unique sonic world. Originally featured in the 1982 film Saath Saath, the song has stayed with listeners across four decades.
The single is part of a larger 2026 catalogue of originals and reinterpretations written in the lineage of Hindi romance, drawing on the songs of Jagjit Singh, Lucky Ali, KK and Mohit Chauhan. ‘Tum Ko Dekha’ was first performed live at the first edition of The Aangan, Viraj’s invite-only live music format, an evening that brings together music, art and hospitality, held at Stainless Art Gallery in Delhi this August.
This is not Viraj’s first collaboration around a Bollywood classic. His rendition of ‘Raataan Lambiyan’, recorded and produced at Berklee, was officially released by Berklee College of Music and Sony Music India, and has crossed 1.7 million views.
Talking about the release, Viraj Bahri said: “When I’m writing original songs, I’m even more careful about what I listen to. Jagjit Singh ji’s records started coming back to me during that phase. He could say so much with so little. That simplicity, with all that depth underneath, is what I wanted my own songs to carry. I kept returning to ‘Tum Ko Dekha’. After a while the thought landed that I could carry it to a generation who may not have experienced the beauty of this song.”
With ‘Tum Ko Dekha’, Viraj brings his own perspective to one of Hindi music’s most loved songs, carrying its lineage forward.
