Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter has been given full editorial control of her September cover for US Vogue and the prestigious cover was revealed in all its Queen Bey glory. Along with her team, she has exercised extraordinary control over the issue, from the cover to even the captions of each photograph. With such control she has invited the readers to understand her without impediment.
The September Issue is traditionally the publications’ biggest and most influential edition of the year, where usually, the magazine cover stars are given little to no say when it comes to such things. The fact that Beyonce’s been given free reign with the cover of the September issue in particular shows the extent of her star power.
It is not just the cover that is making the headlines, the Lemonade singer is being praise for her decision of choosing a 23-year old Tyler Mitchell to shoot for the Vogue US cover, making him the first black photographer in the magazine’s 126-year history. She said, ‘Until there is a mosaic of perspectives coming from different ethnicities behind the lens, we will continue to have a narrow approach and view of what the world actually looks like. That is why I wanted to work with this brilliant 23-year-old photographer Tyler Mitchell.’
Rather surprisingly, instead of opting for opulent and high budget sets, the singer opted most of her images shot in front of different coloured sheets in the middle of a grassy landscape. It wasn’t just the backdrops that were kept to a minimum, the 22-time Grammy winner also stuck to neutral beauty looks and rather understated Gucci looks. One look at the cover and you will see queen B looking surreal vision in a white Gucci gown. About her natural aesthetic of the shoot, Beyoncé revealed, ‘I think it’s important for women and men to see and appreciate the beauty in their natural bodies. That’s why I stripped away the wigs and hair extensions and used little makeup for this shoot.’
The star made her stage comeback after the birth of the twins at the Coachella music festival in April this year. She is currently on a US and European tour with rapper husband Jay-Z. In the open essay, Beyoncé talks about many things including her career, husband and childbirth experience. She opens up about the traumatic birth of her twins, Sir and Rumi, who were born last year via emergency C-section. Talking about learning to love her body again, she stated, ‘To this day my arms, shoulders, breasts, and thighs are fuller. I have a little mommy pouch, and I’m in no rush to get rid of it. I think it’s real.’
