Description : Sanya Malik’s Black Cube Gallery is proud to present Modern Freskos, the first solo exhibition in India by Berlin-based contemporary artist Paul Kuntze. Born in 1995, Kuntze brings an extraordinary synthesis of history and modernity, reimagining the grandeur of Baroque frescoes through a distinctly contemporary lens.
Rooted in deep admiration for the ceiling paintings of historic churches and palaces, Kuntze’s practice bridges centuries of artistic thought. His works recall the celestial drama of Baroque frescoes; those vast, illusionistic portals into divine space; while embracing the gestural freedom and abstraction of the 20th century. In his own words, Kuntze “creates something that reminds the viewer of original frescos but with intuitive parts in it, like the figures, to confront the viewers with their own creativity.”
The tension between control and intuition and precision and spontaneity on his canvases, gives the works their unique resonance. They appear both ancient and alive, as if fragments of a celestial ceiling had drifted gently down to earth.
As Black Cube introduces Paul Kuntze to Indian audiences, Modern Freskos stands as both homage and innovation – a testament to how history can be reborn through the hand of a new generation
Artist Bio
Paul Kuntze, born in 1995 in Berlin, Germany is a contemporary painter whose practice explores the boundaries of figurative and abstract art. Inspired by the artistic lineage of his grandfather, who studied drawing with Max Liebermann, Kuntze began his painting career as a self-taught artist in 2019. He has since developed a distinctive visual language, launching his acclaimed ‘Modern Fresko’ series in 2023.
Rather than recreating classical scenes, Kuntze draws from abstract expressionism to evoke the atmosphere, motion, and sense of grandeur associated with traditional baroque frescoes. His work has been featured in Haze Magazin and other notable publications, and he has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, organizing and participating in artist residencies in Vienna and Tuscany. Upcoming exhibitions include shows in the United States and India, as well as Kuntze’s first museum exhibition in Germany, reflecting the growing demand for his work.
This would be Kuntze’s first solo exhibition in India, following his debut showcase at Art Mumbai in 2025 by Black Cube Gallery.
