WeaverStory proudly unveils its Makhmal collection — a thoughtful revival of India’s historic silk velvet tradition that blends royal heritage with contemporary elegance. Once the fabric of queens and nawabs, makhmal now returns under WeaverStory’s research initiative to preserve traditional weaving while offering modern silhouettes crafted for today’s sophisticated wearer.

Woven by master artisans on specialized looms, genuine makhmal is created using a double-layer weave that is later cut to yield its signature plush pile. This labour-intensive method, rooted in weaving hubs like Banaras, produces velvet with an opulent texture and luminous depth.

Designed especially for colder months, WeaverStory’s velvet pieces are perfectly suited for winter, offering both warmth and grandeur. The collection features meticulous zardozi hand-embroidery, with artisans stitching floral, paisley, and geometric motifs using gold and silver threads, dabka, naqshi, sequins, and pearls — inspired by Mughal and Rajasthani art.

The Makhmal line is remarkably versatile, comprising velvet suitsladies’ angrakhasrichly embroidered blousessleek statement jacketspalazzo (farshi) suit sets, and elegant dushalas (long dupattas). For example, there are jewel-toned kurta sets in velvet with farshi pants and scalloped organza dupattas. Angrakha styles in deep greens and purples exhibit overlapping panels and zari embroidery. Sleeveless and cropped jackets offer layering options decorated with bold zardozi motifs. The dushalas feature velvet bases with striped chanderi tissue borders and delicate zari buti work.

Beyond aesthetics, WeaverStory’s research documents every stage: the dyeing of jewel tones, embroidery technique, motif lineage, and the practicality of velvet as winter wear. Each garment is both a cultural artifact and a refined fashion statement — ideal for festive celebrations, weddings, and connoisseurs of slow fashion.
