This year too, the tradition continues with the release of the teaser of a brand-new song by the acclaimed singer-songwriter Soumita Saha.
Her latest composition, titled “Uma Eseche”, has been released on the official YouTube channel of Music Zone Record Label. The song beautifully encapsulates the emotions surrounding the arrival of Goddess Durga, fondly known as Uma, to her father’s abode. In Hindu mythology, Uma resides in Kailash with her husband, Lord Mahadev. However, every year during the auspicious month of Ashwin in autumn, she returns to her father Giriraj Himalaya’s home. This annual divine homecoming is the essence of Durga Puja celebrations, and Soumita’s new song pays a heartfelt tribute to this tradition.
“Uma Eseche” narrates this cultural and spiritual journey in a melodious form. One of the standout lines in the lyrics is “Shajbe Uma Daaker Shaje” which translates to “Uma is getting adorned in Daaker decoration.” The reference here is rooted in history. During the British era, decorative shiny papers and jari works used to be imported via mail—called daak in Bengali. Hence, the unique traditional décor came to be known as Daaker Shaj. By weaving this symbolism into her song, Soumita not only celebrates the beauty of the Goddess but also revives the nostalgic traditions associated with Durga Puja. Speaking about the making of Uma Eseche Soumita adds ” Durga Puja has always been very close to my heart. With Uma Eseche, I wanted to capture the essence of Uma’s homecoming—the joy, the nostalgia, and the cultural traditions that make this festival so special. The dhaak beats, the daaker shaj reference, everything is my way of celebrating the Goddess and the timeless emotion of Bengal’s biggest festival.”
