The six-yard sensation

The Asha Gautam masterpiece collection of trousseau sarees are created with techniques requiring a high degree of skill, perseverance and detailing. Says the designer, “Each piece take months in the making, and this is why we’re calling it the Masterpiece Collection. As designers, we love these crafts and we want these skills to be sustained and passed on to the future generations. India is the only country in the world that still has these crafts, and we want to make an impact by focusing on it exclusively. Right now we are focusing on three weaves, Banarasi, Paithani, and Bandhani.

This collection has been inspired by nature and our surroundings, so you see a lot of elements like flowers, trees, peacocks, and birds. Some designs revolve around folk art reminiscing vintage charm. A lot of new weaving processes and techniques have been applied to make the collection relevant to today.

Highly twisted silk yarns are used with zari to make the saree more drape-friendly, and even linen is woven in a different manner to make it more conducive for lehengas. Patola art is used to weave sarees in Banaras and then bandhani is done to create something exceptional. The colour palette ranges from radiant shades like Aurora red, bottle green, dandelion yellow, and geranium pink, to pastels like Hemlock green, opal green and mint.
