With emotions of (BOM)bay, the artist turns her attention to the emotional landscape of a city that is experienced as much through its rhythms and relationships as through its physical spaces. The exhibition explores Bombay as a city of movement, contradiction, resilience, tenderness, longing and dreams.
For Swati , Bombay cannot be understood through maps or monuments alone. It is a city that is felt, absorbed and carried within. Its emotional character emerges through the everyday experiences of the people who inhabit it, from the crowded local trains and restless streets to the quiet expansiveness of the sea.
The works reflect the city’s constant urgency and forward motion. Mumbai’s local trains become spaces where ambition, fatigue, hope and resilience intersect, while fleeting encounters between strangers reveal a sense of shared experience. This energy is balanced by moments of stillness, particularly along the city’s coastline, where the sea becomes a space for reflection, vulnerability and release.
The exhibition also engages with Bombay’s many contrasts. Skyscrapers stand alongside crowded neighbourhoods, prosperity exists alongside hardship, and moments of struggle are often accompanied by unexpected acts of generosity. Rather than presenting the city through a single perspective, emotions of (BOM)bay embraces these contradictions as an integral part of its identity.
The monsoon forms another important emotional layer within the exhibition. Rain transforms the city’s colours, rhythms and routines, bringing disruption as well as beauty. Through this changing atmosphere, Bombay emerges as a city that continually adapts and finds its rhythm again.
Romance, too, finds its place in the artist’s vision of the city. Late-night conversations, cutting chai, rain-soaked streets and the glow of streetlights create an atmosphere where love and chaos coexist. These fleeting moments contribute to the exhibition’s broader exploration of how personal emotions become intertwined with the character of a place.
At its heart, the exhibition refers to Bombay as a city of dreams shaped by persistence and sacrifice. It is a place that can be demanding and unforgiving, yet continues to inspire people to imagine something beyond their present circumstances.
Through this seventh solo exhibition, Swati invites viewers to experience Bombay not as a destination, but as an emotional encounter, one where exhaustion and excitement, loneliness and belonging, despair and hope exist simultaneously.
