Introducing Lafaani | Contemporary Designs Shaped by Environmental Thinking

We are delighted to introduce Lafaani, a contemporary Indian design label founded by environmentalists Drishti Modi and Rashmick Bose. After completing their master's in Environmental Studies and Resources Management, the founders spent years working across environmental research, agriculture, water and sanitation, and waste management before bringing the same systems-thinking approach to fashion. We are delighted to introduce Lafaani, a contemporary Indian design label founded by environmentalists Drishti Modi and Rashmick Bose. Named after the Urdu word for immortality, Lafaani is built on the belief that clothing should live for many moons rather than a single season. While sustainability is often reduced to the use of responsible fibres and fabrics, Lafaani approaches it as a way of living. Guided by the principles of continuity and circularity, Lafaani proposes a blueprint for fashion, where sustainability is woven into every aspect of the brand’s existence across production, consumption and post-consumption with consideration and care. All Lafaani pieces are 100% biodegradable.

This holistic approach was recognised when Lafaani was selected as the runners up for the Circular Design Challenge 2024, presented at the Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI in partnership with the United Nations.

At the heart of the label is a distinctive design language that the founders describe as soft utility wear, created for Slow Living. Rather than treating handloom as a symbol of nostalgia, Lafaani positions it within a modern design vocabulary that is refined, understated and made for everyday living.

Lafaani works closely with craft clusters in Kutch (Gujarat) for handloom Kala Cotton, Maheshwar (Madhya Pradesh) for Medium and Heavy Cottons like Khadi Denim, Mumbai, (Maharashtra) for Eco Printing reusing temple offerings, Murshidabad (West Bengal)- Light-weight cottons and silk, Baragaon (Uttar Pradesh)-hand woven Light-weight cottons, Bolpur (West Bengal)- handwoven Cotton Indigos and Natural Dye cottons, Nadia (West Bengal)- handwoven Silk Organza and Silk. Lafaani brings together handloom, eco printed textiles and indigenous materials like Desi Oon and circular practices to preserve endangered craft traditions while creating garments designed to return gently to the earth.

The craft of Kantha is used in its designs not just for its visual language, but also as a practice of function; tracing the craft’s origins. As a made-to-order brand, inclusivity is central to creation. Alongside their custom offerings, they also provide off-the-rack sizes up to 4XL, ensuring a wider range of bodies can find their fit.

The brand’s latest collection, Unquiet, continues the same philosophy. Inspired by the idea of reclaiming authorship, asserting visibility and demanding recognition, the collection explores clothing as a quiet expression of individuality. Contemporary tailoring, fluid forms and tactile handloom fabrics come together to create pieces that embody both confidence and comfort, reflecting Lafaani’s belief that thoughtful design should endure in both form and purpose.

Attached is the Lafaani Brand Book, which offers a deeper insight into the brand’s philosophy, design process and creative vision.

As Lafaani’s communications partner, we look forward to working closely with you and will be in touch with story ideas, feature pitches and future collection updates.
