Meenakshi, Madurai and Malli are inseparable. Malli is the Jasmine specific to Madurai, fabled for its intoxicating fragrance. Madurai is the home, the temple-city of Meenakshi. Killi means Parrot in Tamil. And Malli Kili, literally the Jasmine Parrot, is an ode to all three.

Malli Kili, the Jasmine Parrot, the celestial companion of goddess Meenakshi, is the whimsical delight, the beauty and the fable of Madurai. Malli Kili is the beauty and enchantment of the lush landscape which is fragrant with Madurai Malli – Jasmine.

Goddess Meenakshi, who is the heart of the ancient city of Madurai, which was already old in 300 BC when Megasthenes, the Greek envoy mentioned the city in his dispatches. The goddess is older still. And it is around her temple that the lush landscape of Madurai unfurls like Meenakshi’s favourite flower – the fragrant Malli, which scents the air of Madurai.

She is worshipped as the green-coloured goddess with fish shaped eyes and a Kili perched on her shoulder. Hers is the abundance of the lands of Madurai – the loamy, red earth rich with verdant vegetation and the river Vaigai, which is said to carry the blessing of fertility in its very Waters.

The flight of Malli Kili, Meenakshi’s Jasmine Parrot is the inspiration for Anavila’s Summer Collection. As he glides over the temple-city and the verdant lands of Madurai at dawn when the air is fragrant with Jasmine; flits through the glossy green of Jasmine bushes as he shelters from the heat of the day, greets dusk over the waters of the Vaigai river; witnesses the beauty of moonlit jasmine fields in the soft night, Malli Kili is the myth and memory and beauty of Meenakshi and her lands – Madurai.

This collection is crafted in linen that breathes and cotton silk that is as soft as the air that the Jasmine Parrot glides through. Its motifs and colours are the colours of the land – deep red and glossy green against the luminous white of a Madurai Malli bloom– the Jasmine grown in the red loamy earth here which is known as the most fragrant Jasmine of all. A Madurai Malli bloom invites you to experience the unfurling of its beauty, which begins as a scent but then speaks to your emotions and feelings. It talks to us of the deep red earth in which it grows. It talks to us of the glossy green of its leaves. It speaks to us of the beauty of a forest bathed in moonlight, when the radiance of the Moon itself seeps into the unopened flower so that when the flower unfurls it offers in its scent a true enchantment of the senses.

But most of all it talks to us of the potency of beauty that is transient, that cannot be captured, only experienced. Like the enchanted flight of a Jasmine Parrot over the landscape of beauty and fables.

Malli Kili is an ode to the enchantment of the Madurai Malli and the land bathed in its fragrance.
