June 2026 – Delhi-based DJ and production collective MadStarBase – made up of Neal Sekhri and Anant Ahuja, celebrated for their bodacious Bollywood bootlegs 1, secured a landmark agreement with India’s oldest music label, Saregama to release four of their popular bootlegs – ‘Dum Maaro Dum’, ‘Saat Samundar’, ‘Meri Umar’ and ‘Piya Tu’, released today.

The agreement marked a pivotal shift for the duo whose viral remixes once faced copyright strikes but now command formal industry recognition.

This collaboration follows their successful 2024 label deal with Universal Music, further cementing their transition from underground disruptors to legitimate label-sanctioned artists, and cemented their position as flagbearers of the desi wave movement.

‘Piya Tu’ is a more languid re-imagining of RD Burman’s cult classic from the 1971 film Caravan, immortalized on screen by the legendary dancer Helen. The dramatic cabaret rhythm – a feature of the original – gets a chill makeover in the remix that was first put out on YouTube in 2019.

For years, MadStarBase’s sassy bootlegs found its audience via YouTube, DJ sets and radio shows around the world. Now fans and new listeners are coming across them on their playlists.

“We’ve been getting messages on DMs saying that they saw Mollywood tracks on their Release Radars or on their weekly new music playlists… That kind of audience reaction is always nice to see,” says Anant aka Ase.

Looking ahead

While the world has been (re)discovering MadStarBase over the past month, the duo has been polishing their new project – combining reggae riddims 2 with Bollywood vocals.

“This project is called Desi Dub Riddims, and it’s kind of like an offshoot or a specific type of remix that we’ve been enjoying making and playing over the last couple of years,” offers Neal.

“It’s the same idea as Mollywood 3 but instead of 808s and hip-hop drums, its reggae riddims underneath the vocals. It’s amazing how good dub reggae sounds with Bollywood vocals; you have to hear it yourself and see what we mean!” adds Anant.

Globetrotting DJ and creative force Diplo gave fans a sneak peak of these desi dub riddims when he played a surprise set at Royal Enfield Motoverse in Goa last year.

Just like with Mollywood remixes, Neal and Anant never really intended to release them as a project, but the audience reaction gave them the confidence.

“We never intended to make a project out of this, but when we realized the impact the tracks had on the crowd and that we had built up a nice collection – these tracks were made slowly over time, from 2022 to now – we thought it was time to release these,” they add.

Desi Dub Riddims will be available in July on YouTube and Bandcamp.

The Saregama remixes are available across all streaming platforms.
