25 Years Of Planet Africa At TIFF’20

At the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), Planet Africa celebrates 25 years, a festival programme dedicated to showcase cinema from Africa and African diaspora.

This year, TIFF is virtual so is Planet Africa where they’ll showcase movies, documentaries and hold a discussion panel to celebrate the amplified voices. To breathe the spirit of Planet Africa, four films will premiere at TIFF.

Tommy Oliver’s ‘40 Years A Prisoner’, shows the life of Mike Africa Jr. who works to uncover the truth behind a few of his life events. Charles Officer’s ‘Akilla’s Escape’, based on spoken-word artist and Dieudo Hamadi’s ‘Downstream to Kinshasa’, true story of Congo war survivors who fought for justice against the government. Lastly, Dawn Porter’s ‘The Way I See It’, highlights BTS work of White House photographer Pete Souza who captured the historic presidency of Barack Obama.

25 origin stories of creative people mostly African women will also be spoken about, like June Givanni, Gaylene Gouldo, Karen Carter, Grecia Mayers, Clement Virgo and Orla Garriques, to name a few. Since Planet Africa was the festival’s hot ticket last year and adding fun to this special edition, Original DJ Dave Campbell will spin his signature eclectic mix to get the party in action.
